The root as well as the leaves contain mucilage – a mucus-like substance that does not dissolve in water. Soothes irritated tissue, particularly mucous membranes (loosens coughs).
Marshmallow is demulcent and tonic (astringent), diuretic, lithotriptic and emollient. It is also a galactogogue, vulnerary, slightly laxative and nutritive. Useful in inflammation and irritation of the alimentary canal, urinary and respiratory organs, Crohn’s disease, Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), gastritis and many other conditions.
