Elderberry is my favorite winter season go-to for patients of all ages, especially children as it tastes great. Elderberry supports immune function with an affinity for the respiratory tract and is rich with Vitamin C and packed with flavonoids. Here are a couple of my favorites:
- Black Elderberry Syrup by Gaia
- Synergistic formula that includes some additional immune supporting botanicals
- Elderberry Syrup by Wise Woman Herbals
- Glycerite formula
While Gaia and Wise Women Herbals make wonderful products, I treasure the bottles of elderberry I receive from friends and patients who harvest their own berries to make syrups and glycerites. Elderberry grows as a shrub or small tree and is native to the United States and Europe. It is easily cultivated and hardy to USDA zone 5. If you are looking for gift ideas this season, an organic elderberry bush (Sambucus nigra) is the perfect gift that keeps on giving! Here are a couple sources for a USDA elderberry bush or seeds. Have a happy and healthy holiday season!
